Boulets de Poulet avec Sauce Rouge – Benin – African Recipes – World Food Challenge
I’m trying an african dish this week straight out of Benin as part of the world food challenge. Each week, I’ll try a different unique recipe or national dish in my attempt at cooking different food around the world.
Boulets de Poulet avec Sauce Rouge is a palm oil or peanut oil chicken dish which translates from french to english as Chicken Meatballs in Red Sauce. It’s a bit different than a lot of other recipes because it uses peanut butter as part of the sauce.
While it’s not the Benin national dish, it contains many staple ingredients typically found in the nation.
This is the first african recipe attempted in the World Food Challenge, and it is a unique one. I was really suprised the peanut butter didn’t make the dish too sweet. The flavors were very earthy.
Let me know if you’ve had any african national dishes and which one I should try next in the comments!
If you want to make sure the dish turns out red, make sure to use palm oil and not peanut oil with the chicken. Both versions of the recipe are nice, but the palm oil will give you a very different color.
Let me know in the comments if you’ve ever been to benin or a west african country near there. What did you eat? What would you like to see?
