You usually have to drive all the way to the Kahuku area of Oahu, Hawaii to get a taste of this local dish. Now you can make it at home!

200g shrimp

(to wash the shrimp)
2 tbsp cornstarch
2 tsp salt
2 tbsp water
(or you can simply use water)

2 tbsp cornstarch
1/3 tsp salt
2 tbsp olive oil
3 cloves garlic
2 tbsp butter
pinch chili
1 lemon
salt and pepper to taste

Make a slit along the spine of the shrimp but leave the skin intact. Devein the shrimp. Wash the shrimp with the cornstach, salt and water. The salt and cornstarch helps clean the shrimp more thoroughly as well as get rid of any fishy smell. Alternatively, you can simply wash them with well with clean water. Next, combine the shrimp with the ingredients for the marinade in a bowl and let it sit for 10 minutes. Mince the garlic and set aside.

Heat butter in a frying pan and add the garlic and chili. Heat until fragrant. (1-2 minutes over medium heat) Add the shrimp and cook the bottom until it changes color. Turn the shrimp over and cook the other side. Be careful not to overcook the shrimp. Overcooking will make them tough. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy them with some steamed rice and make sure to pour the garlic butter over the rice as well.
